Eric Adams
110th Mayor of New York City
Bio:
Mayor Eric Adams was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, on September 1, 1960. At the age of 15, Adams was beaten by police, an incident that would motivate him to join law enforcement in an effort to prevent future injustices within the police department. He would go on to serve the city for 22 years as an NYPD police officer, before running for state senate in 2006, where he would remain until 2013, when he was elected Brooklyn's Borough President. In 2021, he ran for city Mayor as a democrat, against republican candidate Curtis Silwa. He won the election with 67.4% of the vote, and has continued to serve as New York City's mayor.
The Role of A Mayor
The mayor serves as the city's chief executive, meaning he can appoint representatives to New York City's government agencies, including, but not limited to the transportation, health, education, finance, police, and fire departments. He must also create a budget plan which will determine the funding that will be allocated to each of the city's agencies, which is passed after months of negotiation with City Council. The mayor is also responsible for proposing and vetoing laws that will effect the city as a whole, which requires him to work with federal and state lawmakers, a dynamic that makes maintaining relationships with his political peers pivotal in the mayoral role.
