Jumaane Williams

New York City's 5th Public Advocate

Bio: Jumaane Williams was born on May 11, 1976, in Brooklyn, New York. Before running for Public Advocate, he was elected to City Council in 2010 with an endorsement from the Working Families Party. He served nine years on City Council, creating notable legislation including the Community Safety Act, which banned biased-based profiling within the New York Police Department. During his time in City Council, Williams participated in multiple protests, including marches in support of immigrant rights and the Occupy Wall Street movement. In 2019, Williams ran for Public Advocate during a special election, which was held after previous Public Advocate, Leticia James, vacated her seat to assume the role of New York's state attorney general. He won with 33% of the overall vote, and has since passed more legislation than any previous Public Advocate before him.

The Role of Public Advocate

The duties of New York City's Public Advocate are true to the title itself. A Public Advocate has the responsibility of addressing citizen's feedback through legislation and overseeing city agencies. The Public Advocate also serves as the chair of Commission of Public Information and Communication, and is next in succession to the mayor, in the event of a vacancy.
